2022: TEK fire practitioners monitoring a burn in the Saskatchewan River Delta.

Current fire, land and resource management challenges require a renewed approach to Indigenous-led uses of fire on the land, particularly in and around the Saskatchewan River Delta.

As a collective framework for fire reconciliation, UNDRIP and the TRC Calls to Action can be used to support the advancement of meaningful engagement of Indigenous groups and communities in the journey of Indigenous-led uses of fire on the land.

Important drivers in fire reconciliation are Indigenous Science and Indigenous Ecological Knowledge grounded in holistic values associated with

  • revitalizing lands, waters and wildlife;
  • accessing multi-year funding—determining long-term interests in socio-cultural, economic and ecological sustainability in and around the Saskatchewan River Delta.
